Elm

Arrested by a splendour of foliage
        That upward
        Thrusts itself
        On a course
        Which only the
        Elm experts
        Know about
And mesmerised by the great trunk tubbiness
        Whose girth
        Even Henry
        Would envy
And stung by the problems of its age
I have stopped

stood and stared

in stance of
        trance

again and more
        asking:

Is such a thing
        not a miracle?

Such a cathedral of
                green

Such muscle of
                wood

Such height of
                leaf

Such an endure of
                grace

Such overall mellifluence!
